Distance Learning Courses

couple talking at computerThe University of Oklahoma offers graduate courses in several distance learning formats as an alternative to completing your degree in a classroom setting.

  • Online courses* – instructor-led courses conducted online within a specified time period. These courses are coded under “Site” as “OL” on the semester schedules.
  • Independent Directed Readings – courses and assignments pre-arranged by special permission for independent study by the student.
  • Independent Study courses – Pre-designed, specific topic, independent study courses for students unable to attend a regular class session. No special permission to enroll is required.

Who are OU Distance Learning courses for?

  • Students in any OU degree program for which the specific Distance Learning course meets a program requirement.

  • Students from other colleges and universities who want to take an OU Distance Learning course for transfer credit.*

  • Individuals who need a course to meet continuing education requirements.

*Distance Learning courses may not exceed 50% of coursework for graduate degree completion. Special rules apply to dual degree situations.

Online Orientation:

  • All students enrolled in online courses will be required to take an online orientation. It is set up as a separate course on Desire2Learn (http://learn.ou.edu) and takes students approximately two hours to complete.

  • Even if students have completed the orientation in a previous semester, we require them to complete the student survey and a short declaration (indicating their earlier completion of the orientation) each semester.
